We offer two types of sedation:

Intravenous sedation

This option is offered to patients who are anxious about having dental treatment and in some cases where a patient has a severe gag reflex.

Intravenous sedation is when a drug is given through injection into a vein (usually in the arm) using a thin needle. The sedative works very quickly and will make the patient feel as though they are asleep, but does not actually induce sleep, instead they will remain conscious and are able to follow instructions. Amnesia is a side effect of the sedation drug which can last until the drug has worn off; because of this the patient is required to be escorted home by a friend or relative. A deposit is required to secure the appointment.

Oral sedation

You will be prescribed an oral sedative to take the evening before and the morning of the treatment and has similar effects as IV sedation. Again a deposit is required and a friend or family member will need to bring the patient to the practice and escort them home.

We recommend that after IV sedation the following steps are taken:

  1. Have your escort take you home and rest for the remainder of the day.
  2. Have an adult stay with you until you're fully alert.
  3. Don't perform any strenuous or hazardous activities and don't drive a motor vehicle for the rest of the day.
  4. Don't eat a heavy meal immediately. If you're hungry, eat something light, e. g. liquids and toast.
  5. If you experience nausea, lie down for a while or drink a glass of coke.
  6. Don't drink alcohol or take medications for the rest of the day unless you've contacted your dentist first.
  7. Take medications as directed by your dentist.
  8. If you have any unusual problems, call your dentist.
